Foster Parent Medical Assistant In Development

Posted by Philip Foster on March 21, 2014 at 6:00 AM Comments comments (0)

All children have doctors appointments and many have other medical needs.  Foster children are no exception.  How are you supposed to keep track of your foster child(ren)'s medical information?  There are apps on Google Play that provide a way to track medical information.  However, none of these apps will interface with Foster Parent Assistant.  Well, that is about to change.  We are developing a medical information add on for Foster Parent Assistant.  Just like our other add ons, this add on will pull child information from the main application.  All you have to do is select the child in the main app and then open this add on.  At your fingertips will be the medical information you have entered for them.  This add on is in the very early stages of development, so the final feature set is not completely settled.  However, we do have a good idea of the features we are hoping to include.  Here they are:

  • Enter information on your child(ren)'s doctors (e.g. name, address, phone, specialty, etc.)
  • Enter information on your child's insurance
  • Enter information from each of your child's doctors appointments
  • Enter allergy information (e.g. what they're allergic to, how severe the allergy is, etc.)
  • Medication information (name of drug, when prescribed, dosage information, instructions for taking the medication, refill information, etc.)

Right now those are the main features planned for the medical add on.  As we get deaper into development this feature list may expand.  We are not expecting to have to exclude any of the features listed here.  So you should be able to count on the items on this list.

We are not ready to set a release date, but we are hoping to have this add on ready for release by this Summer.  Stay tuned and be sure to download Foster Parent Assistant so that you will be ready when the add on is available.

Foster Parent Assistant Customer Feedback Survey

Posted by Philip Foster on March 9, 2014 at 12:00 AM Comments comments (0)

We have just released a survey for our customers.  We want to know what you think.  Are you a foster parent who has downloaded Foster Parent Assistant (and maybe one or both of the add ons)?  We want to hear from you.  Take a few minutes to complete the survey.  It is important to us to continue to meet the needs of foster parents.  The only way we can do that is if you tell us what you want (or need).  What is your favorite part of Foster Parent Assistant?  What could (or should) be changed?  What could we add to make the app work better for you?  Let us know.  We will use the results of this survey to inform our development efforts on Foster Parent Assistant going forward.

So, if you want to have a say in where we go from here, fill out the survey.  If you don't, you'll be missing out on the chance to contribute to the future development of this great app.  We hope to hear from you soon.

Delay in Foster Parent Assistant Update

Posted by Philip Foster on February 16, 2014 at 9:20 PM Comments comments (0)

We had hoped to release Foster Parent Assistant version 1.3 back in December.  Due to circumstances beyond our control we have had a major delay in the release.  We apologize for this delay.  We are finally almost ready to release this big update to our signature app.  We shared in an earlier post the feature list for this update.  That list has not changed.  We are currently working on some final debugging of the update.  As a small company, our only chance of competing with larger app companies is to release applications that are as bug free as possible.  For this reason, we are not quite ready to release the update.  We are hoping to be able to announce a release date for the update by the end of this week.  Stay tuned and check back frequently.  Once we release this update, we will also be announcing the next steps in the development of the Foster Parent Assistant family of apps.  So, stay tuned for this as well.

Foster Parent Assistant Version 1.3 Coming Monday, December 16

Posted by Philip Foster on December 12, 2013 at 8:00 PM Comments comments (0)

The latest update for Foster Parent Assistant will be released on Monday, December 16.  Right now we are working on fixing the last few bugs.  In addition, we are working on getting the website ready for the release of the latest version of our flagship product.  Version 1.3 will provide more updates (and new features) than any previous release of Foster Parent Assistant.  Most importantly, we believe that the changes will make foster parents' lives easier.  That is our goal.  Foster Parent Assistant is of no use to foster parents if it makes life more difficult.  That is the last thing foster parents need.  With that in mind, we are constantly seeking ways to make Foster Parent Assistant more user friendly and building in as many great features as possible.  The version 1.3 release addresses both of these issues with the application.  So, without further delay, here is a list of the updates we have made for Foster Parent Assistant version 1.3.

  • Replaced the swipe navigation system from previous versions with buttons.  Users were reporting problems with the responsiveness of the swipe method of navigating the application.  We considered simply trying to fix the swipe responsiveness.  However, in the end, we felt that it would be easier to replace the swiping with forward and back buttons.  This affects the main screen, the Conversation screen and the Notes screen.
  • Added the ability to save a Social Security Number and Medical Insurance Number for each child.  Both of these fields are optional.  In addition, the Social Security Number is masked as it is entered.  In order to retrieve it, the parent must create and enter a password.  Also, the Social Security Number is stored in an encrypted form in the database.
  • In previous versions of Foster Parent Assistant, children who had been marked as having been adopted or having left the user's foster home were no longer viewable inside the application.  It was brought to our attention that there may be times when a foster parent needs access to "old" children.  Fortunately this information is still stored in the database.  The application now provides foster parents with the ability to view these children.  It is optional and can be toggled on and off with a check box at the bottom of the main screen.
  • Foster parents can now same the names (and relationships to the child) for more than one biological parent.  Previously, there was simply a single biological parent field.  This has been replaced with the ability to enter more than one one biological parent along with each parent's relationship to the foster child.  Biological parents entered using previous versions of Foster Parent Assistant will be seemlessly moved over to the new configuration.
  • Added the name of the current child to the bottom of the Conversation and Notes screens.  These screens only allow parents to work with the child currently selected on the main screen.  In previous versions, once the parent opened the Conversation or Note screen it was no longer possible to see the name of the current child.  Therefore, it was not possible to see whose conversations (or notes) were being updated.  Now, the name of the currently selected child will appear at the bottom of both screens.

We trust that these new features will make Foster Parent Assistant more usable and our users more interested in the application.  If you appreciate these updates please spread the word about Foster Parent Assistant.  The more users we have the better.  Also, please let us know what you think by rating (and reviewing) the application.  We have already made changes to the application based on feedback on https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pinepointmobile.fosterparent" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Google Play.

Two More Features For Next Version of Foster Parent Assistant

Posted by Philip Foster on November 14, 2013 at 6:00 AM Comments comments (0)

We remain hard at work on the next version of Foster Parent Assistant.  We have been adding the new features which were promised in our last blog post.  As we have been working on these features, we decided on two additional new features for the update.  Both of these new features should improve the usability of Foster Parent Assistant.

  • Export information for the selected child.  This will allow foster parents to export all available information for the selected child.  Information will be exported into several different text files.  These files will be saved to a folder on the device's SD card.  This will provide parents with an easy way to provide information requested by outside sources.  There may be times when a social worker or other individual needs to be able to see the information collected on a particular child.  This new feature will make that possible.
  • View all children who have ever been entered into the system.  Right now, the application only provides parents with access to children who are still considered foster children.  The software allows parents to set the date that a child was either adopted or left the care of the application user.  Right now, once a child has either been adopted or left care they are no longer viewable inside the application.  It came to our attention, that this could be a problem.  There may well be times when a parent needs to be able to view information on a former foster child.  The new version will allow parents to view all of the children who have ever been in their care.

We hope that this will provide foster parents with additional tools to make their lives easier.  We are well aware that being a foster parent is A LOT of work.  If this application can help to ease at least some of the record keeping chores, it is well worth our time in developing it.

As with these new features, we will continue to do our best to come up with new features that will make Foster Parent Assistant the best application possible.

Stay tuned for more information about this update.  Also, we are hoping to be able to announce a release date for this update sometime in the next couple of weeks.

Update To Foster Parent Assistant In The Works

Posted by Philip Foster on November 6, 2013 at 6:00 AM Comments comments (0)

Now that we have released our second add on, we are returning to the main Foster Parent Assistant application.  The next update for Foster Parent Assistant will be more than just a maintenance update.  We are making some significant changes to the application.  These changes were suggested by a foster parent in our community.  As always, our goal with Foster Parent Assistant is to meet the record keeping requirements of foster parents.  Therefore, it is important for us to work with actual foster parents to determine how best to meet these needs.  In response to this feedback, here is a sneak peak at the changes we are planning for the next version of Foster Parent Assistant (probably version 1.3).

  • Complete revision of the system for navigating between foster children (and between conversations and notes)
  • Addition of the ability to enter a (encrypted) social security number for each foster child
  • Addition of the ability to enter a medical insurance number for each foster child
  • Allow foster parents to add more than one biological parent name for each foster child

As of right now, these are the planned updates to the main application.  In addition, we will begin development of the next add on in the near future.  We will save discussion of that for a later blog post.  We are still in the process of deciding among several options for the next add on.  As always, stay tuned for more information regarding this continually evolving application.

Foster Parent Appointment Assistant Released

Posted by Philip Foster on October 21, 2013 at 8:00 PM Comments comments (0)

We have released Foster Parent Appointment Assistant.  This is the latest add on for Foster Parent Assistant.  Foster Parent Assistant (FREE) is required in order to use Appointment Assistant.  Appointment Assistant sells for $.99 on Google Play.  In addition to the basic version of Appointment Assistant there is also a version for devices running Ice Cream Sandwich (and later).  The Ice Cream Sandwich version also sells for $.99.  We discussed the features of this latest add on in a previous blog post.  The release version does not have any additional features beyond those discussed in that blog.  However, we had promised our users some screen shots of the latest add on.  In the rush leading up to release, we did not have a chance to post any screen shots in our blog.  So, better late than never, we are finally releasing some screen shots of Appointment Assistant.  These screen shots apply to both version of Appointment Assistant.  We hope our users enjoy the screen shots.  Head over to our apps page for more information and links to the Google Play pages to download the add on.

After One Week Delay Appointment Assistant To Release Monday, October 21

Posted by Philip Foster on October 17, 2013 at 8:00 PM Comments comments (0)

Foster Parent Appointment Assistant is finally nearly complete.  We have been working very hard to release the best possible product.  As a small operation, bugs in our apps can sometimes cause delays in release.  We felt that it was better to release a more stable product rather than release a bug filled product on time.  We hope our customers will agree.  The delay was related to the Ice Cream Sandwich version of Appointment Assistant.  This version automatically adds new appointments to the user's device calendar in addition to the calendar built in to the add on.  Getting this feature properly implemented turned out to be more work than we expected, but we are confident that the problem is fixed and we will be ready for release on Monday.

The other side effect of this delay is that we have not had a chance to release any screen shots of the new add on.  Unfortunately, this will probably not happen before the Monday release of the add on.  Once the add on is released, there will be screen shots on our website as well as on the add on's Google Play page.  We hope that this is not a major inconvenience for our users.  Again we apologize for this change.

In spite of the delay, we hope that foster parents will find Foster Parent Appointment Assistant a helpful add on as they continue to do the important work of parenting these precious children.
